A Brief Understanding of Calcined Alumina
Jan 26, 2025
Calcined alumina is a ceramic material made from alumina through high-temperature calcination. Its main component is α-Al2O3 and it plays a crucial role in many industrial fields.
I. Preparation Process
Raw Material Preparation: Industrial alumina powder is selected as the raw material. The particle size and purity of the powder have a significant impact on the performance of the final product, so strict screening and treatment are required.
Mixing and Ball Milling: The selected alumina powder and a certain amount of binder are uniformly mixed and then processed in a ball mill to form a homogeneous granular material.
Forming and Drying: The ball-milled material is placed in a casting machine to be pressed into the desired shape and size. The green body is then placed in a drying room for drying, which usually takes several days to reduce the moisture content to below 1%.
Sintering: The dried green body is placed in a high-temperature furnace for sintering at a temperature of 1500-1700°C. During sintering, organic substances and impurities in the green body volatilize and crystallize, eventually forming a dense calcined alumina ceramic material.
II. Performance Characteristics
High Melting Point and Thermal Stability: The melting point is as high as 2000-2600°C, far exceeding that of most metals and non-metallic materials. It can maintain high strength and stability at high temperatures.
Excellent Wear Resistance: The Mohs hardness is usually above 9, which is extremely high. It is an ideal abrasive material and is widely used in the wear-resistant field.
Good Electrical Insulation: It has excellent dielectric properties and resistivity, making it suitable for manufacturing capacitors, insulators, and other electronic components.
III. Application Fields
Ceramic Field: As a main component of ceramic materials, it is widely used in refractory bricks, ceramic tubes, ceramic cutting tools, and other ceramic products. It can also be combined with other materials to prepare ceramic composites with special properties.
Abrasive Field: Due to its high hardness and wear resistance, it is an ideal choice for manufacturing abrasives. Many common grinding wheels and cutting discs are made of calcined alumina.
Electronic Materials Field: Because of its good electrical insulation and dielectric properties, it can be used to manufacture capacitors, insulators, resistors, and other electronic components. It can also be used as a transparent electrode material in the solar cell field.
