Alumina: Tight Supplies May Lead To A Short-Term Surge in Futures Prices

Nov 18, 2024

According to the news on November 20th, in terms of supply, there are disruptions in the bauxite supply in Guinea. The GAC mine is at risk of permanent closure, and the bauxite mines in northern China have not resumed production on a large scale, resulting in a tight spot market for alumina. On the demand side, with the rising costs, some domestic electrolytic aluminum enterprises have cut production. However, there are also resumptions of production and the release of new production capacities, which have had a negligible impact on the demand for alumina for the time being. Some electrolytic aluminum plants in northern China have the demand for winter stockpiling. In terms of inventory, as of November 15th, the alumina inventory at domestic ports was 50,500 tons, remaining at a low level. Overall, the disruptions on the overseas mining end and the tight domestic spot supply are supporting the futures prices of alumina. Although there are some disruptions on the consumption end, the impact is small. It is expected that the futures prices of alumina may continue to climb in the short term.
